Portugal will have a full squad for their Euro 2016 final against France, with defender Pepe recovering from a thigh injury and defensive midfielder William Carvalho returning from suspension.

The Real Madrid man missed the semi-final against Wales in Lyon on Wednesday after sustaining the thigh problem in training, but he confirmed that he was fully fit and available for Fernando Santos’ side after returning to the practice field ahead of the clash against Les Bleus.

In the pre-match press conference at the Stade de France, he said that tomorrow’s match would be the most important match of his life:

In terms of fitness I’m fine. I trained with the squad today and I’m available for the coach.

It means so much to me to play a final for my country. We want to give joy to the Portuguese people. There will be 11 million behind the 11 on the pitch and the three subs too. We want to make history for Portuguese football.

Santos was in a bullish mood ahead of the final in the press conference, stating that he wanted Portugal to prove everyone wrong and lift the trophy in Paris, as well as brushing aside the Seleção’s poor record against France.

He said:

The side was always confident from the off. I want French people to continue to say Portugal won without deserving it and that we walk off with the trophy.

This is the first final between Portugal and France, and I’m sure Portugal will make history in this game tomorrow.

The encounter will the second time that Portugal have played in a final of a major tournament – the first being on home soil at Euro 2004, where they were shocked by Greece in Lisbon – and many will be hoping that the result goes a bit differently this time around.
