England defeated Italy Under-21’s at St Mary’s stadium in Southampton as they scored a 93rd-minute goal to win the match.
It was England who started the match with a bang – Demarai Gray pounced on a loose ball in the box to make it 1-0 in the sixth minute.
Italy were soon level, though, as Brendan Galloway deflected a cross into his own net in the 13th-minute.
The away side then capitalised on their dominance in the 28th-minute. Di Francesco tapped in on the line after a corner was flicked on into his path.
Lewis Baker then drew England level in the 60th-minute. The Vitesse midfielder fired in a low drive from 20-yards that squirmed through the goalkeeper’s hands to make it 2-2.
England then won the game in dramatic fashion, with Jack Stephens smashing the ball in from close range in the 93rd minute to seal the win.
Here is how we rated the England players…
Angus Gunn: 5
Italy had two meaningful chances and scored two goals. Gunn only had to pick the ball out of his net. His kicking was also sub-par, with a number of balls going straight out of play.
Isaac Hayden: 7
Very quiet game for Hayden from a defensive perspective – Italy went down their right mainly.
However, Hayden pushed forward when he could and looked comfortable on the ball.
Callum Chambers: 8
Superb performance from Chambers at the back. He made some exceptional interceptions and blocks.
Jack Stephens: 8
Not only did he score the winner in added time, but Stephens had a very good game in defence as well.
He played out from the back well and impressed alongside Chambers.
Brendan Galloway: 7
Although he did score an own goal, which was unfortunate, Galloway had a solid game at left-back.
The West Brom loanee made some very well-timed challenges and won a number of aerial duels.
Nathan Chalobah: 9
Easily the Man of the Match. Chalobah was dominant in midfield.
He won numerous tackles and his use of the ball was crisp and effective.
A call-up to the senior side surely cannot be too far away for the young man.
James Ward-Prowse: 7
Solid display from the captain. He controlled the game in the centre of the park and picked out some great passes.
However, his set-piece delivery was very poor.
John Swift: N/A
Hard to judge given that he was subbed off after just 30 minutes.
Although, he showed good movement and touches in the early exchanges.
Nathan Redmond: 8
Another excellent display from Redmond on the international scene.
It was his sublime through ball that created the opening goal, and his pace was a threat to Italy throughout the match.
Demarai Gray: 8
Superb performance from Gray on the wing. He used his pace to great effect and took his goal very well in the first half.
Lewis Baker: 7
Despite scoring the second goal for England, Baker was ineffective for the majority of the game.
He failed to get involved in the play throughout the match and didn’t impose himself on the play at all.
