Gareth Southgate has named his England squad for the upcoming games with Germany and Lithuania and it’s fair to say that it has raised a few eyebrows.
The England boss did have his hands tied somewhat with the injuries to the likes of Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney, but there are still a few surprise selections and omissions from the squad.
We’ve taken a look at some of the players who will count themselves as unlucky not to be included:
Jordan Pickford
The Sunderland ‘keeper might have thought that he had a chance to make the full squad ahead of Fraser Forster as the Southampton man isn’t in the best of form.
Ben Foster
Ben Foster has been in really good form for West Brom this year and will have had his eye on one of the backup goalkeeper spots.
Leighton Baines
He may be 32 but Southgate has picked other older players in the past and in this squad. Leighton Baines could easily have been included ahead of Shaw.
Aaron Cresswell
Aaron Cresswell was in the last England squad but the return of Luke Shaw has seen him drop out of contention.
Harry Maguire
Harry Maguire has been in good form for Hull and might have had his eye on the centre back slot that was given to Michael Keane.
Danny Drinkwater
Premier League winner and Champions League quarter-finalist Danny Drinkwater probably can’t believe that Jake Livermore has been selected instead of him.
Jack Wilshere
Jack Wilshere is apparently fit again after a recent injury. He’s played very well for Bournemouth and will be disappointed not be picked ahead of Jake Livermore.
Andy Carroll
Gareth Southgate said Andy Carroll needs more minutes under his belt before he’s considered for selection yet has chosen players like Luke Shaw who have played fewer games than the striker.
Troy Deeney
Troy Deeney is another striker who might have had his eye on a call up with Kane, Sturridge, Rooney etc injured.
Andre Gray
With so many injuries to the regular strikers, Andre Gray will have been hoping his recent displays would have earned him a call up over Jermain Defoe.
Danny Welbeck
Danny Welbeck has been out for a long time so his exclusion is somewhat understandable but he certainly won’t be happy about it.
Theo Walcott
Probably the most notable omission is Theo Walcott. The Arsenal man has been scoring goals for fun all season and yet has been left out whilst Nathan Redmond and Jesse Lingard, players who many would say aren’t as good as him, got picked.
