Lukas Podolski ended his international career with style as his goal claimed the win for Germany against England in Dortmund.
The former Arsenal striker scored the only goal of the game as the German’s ground out a 1-0 win against Gareth Southgate’s experimental England side.
Southgate opted to go with a 3-4-2-1 formation, which showed signs of promise throughout the game.
It was England who came the closest to scoring in the first-half. Adam Lallana hit the post with a left-footed effort before Dele Alli shot straight at Marc-Andre Ter Stegan in a one-on-one situation.
Podolski, who was returning for his last ever Germany appearance, then won the game when he smashed the ball into the top corner from 20-yards. A fitting end to a superb international career for Podolski.
He has ended on 130 caps, scoring 49 goals for his country, but we are here for England; and here is how we rated their players…
Joe Hart: 7
Had no chance with the goal but did make a superb save from Leroy Sane in the second half to prevent a goal. Solid.
Gary Cahill: 8
Despite claims for a penalty against him for handball in the first-half, Cahill was superb at the back.
He made some excellent tackles and won a lot of headers against Germany’s forwards.
Composed performance.
Michael Keane: 7
Considering it was his England debut and he was playing against Germany, he did well.
He had a few lapses in concentration, but that is to be expected at his age.
Keane made some crunching tackles and looked comfortable on the ball when taking it out from the back.
Chris Smalling: 7
Average performance from Smalling in defence. Made some good interceptions and tackles and drove out of defence with ease.
Kyle Walker: 7
Solid display from Walker down the right-flank. He didn’t do much wrong but was not overly impressive either.
Jake Livermore: 7
Decent run-out for Livermore in midfield. Controlled the play when England had the ball and played simple passes, solid.
Eric Dier: 6
Got stuck in a few times but was not as influential as he usually is in the holding midfield role. He may be disappointed with his performance.
Ryan Bertrand: 6
His use of the ball down the left was fairly poor. He whipped a couple of good crosses in but failed to get into good positions with the ball. Could have done better.
Adam Lallana: 7
Came close to scoring in the first half when he hit the post and his control on the ball was excellent throughout. Unlucky.
Dele Alli: 6
His skill on the ball was superb at times but his miss was unforgivable. He had all the time in the world to pick his spot but hit it straight down the throat of the keeper.
Jamie Vardy: 7
Ran his socks off up front for England and put 110% into his performance. Not everything he tried worked out but he put the effort in, that is all you can ask for.
