Portugal and Mexico shared the spoils in their first group game as they held each other to a 2-2 draw in the Confederations Cup.
The video assistant referee was tested early on. Pepe thought he had given Portugal the lead but it was ruled out after the referee conferred with his staff.
Portugal did, though, take the lead minutes later. Ronaldo played the ball across the box and Ricardo Quaresma sold Ochoa before tapping the ball into an empty net.
Mexico were able to find an equaliser towards the end of the first-half. Javier Hernandez leap in front of his markers to head the ball into the bottom corner and draw his side level.
An own goal from Hector Herrera looked to have won the game for Portugal but Hector Moreno equalised in the last-minute from a corner to earn Mexico a point.
Here is how we rated the Portuguese player’s performances…
Rui Patricio: 6
Had virtually no saves to make and had no chance with either goal. Hard to gauge a performance, so a 6 it is.
Cedric Soares: 7
Impressive display from Cedric at right-back. It was his cross that was deflected in off Herrera to give Portugal the 2-1 lead. Got forward well and defended adequately.
Pepe: 5
Got caught out a couple of times, especially for the first goal. Disappointed in his performance.
Jose Fonte: 5
Fonte could be to blame for the first goal, but certainly the second. He lost out to Moreno in the air to allow him to score. Poor from the West Ham defender.
Raphael Guerreiro: 6
Raphael did not really do much during the game. He made some good interceptions and played forward passes but he rarely stood out during the game, average.
William Carvalho: 6
I forgot Carvalho was playing in the second half. Went missing in spells but did break up the play well in the first half and at times during the second.
Andre Gomes: 7
Looked good on the ball and was crisp with his passing. He looked to drive forward whenever possible.
Ricardo Quaresma: 8
Skillfull, lively and exciting display from Quaresma. He opened the scoring and could have had a couple more with the opportunities he created for himself.
Joao Moutinho: 5
Poor performance from Moutinho. He rarely found space to pick up the ball in the Mexico half, having to drop back into central midfield to have a touch of the ball.
Nani: 5
Not Nani’s best game for his country by a long shot. The former Manchester United winger struggled on the wing and failed to make a big impact on the game.
Cristiano Ronaldo: 7
Set up Quaresma for his goal but was unable to muster enough quality moments to win the game for Portugal.
Not a bad performance but not his finest by any stretch.
