Six men have been detained by police in Israel after Real Madrid stat Isco was approached by a man holding a knife following Spain’s World Cup qualifying match against Israel on Monday night, as per a report by Spanish news outlet Sport.

Israeli police have held six supporters in custody following the incident after Spain beat Israel 1-0 thanks to a goal from Asier Illaramendi.

The six men who have been detained managed to break onto the pitch after full-time and hurried towards the midfielder, with one of the men clearly carrying a knife.

It is reported that the knife was dropped and the men didn’t get close enough to the La Liga playmaker for it to be deemed a breach of security, with police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld saying:

There was no security incident. The usual security measures were carried out last night, during and after the game.

The man brandishing the knife either dropped or let go of the weapon as he got closer to Isco, so there is some question over his intentions but it’s certainly a relief that the men were detained by police before they could get within harm’s reach of the Spanish midfielder.

Questions will now be asked about how the man in question was able to get a knife into the stadium in the first place, nevermind get it onto the pitch.
