England booked their place in the 2018 World Cup in Russia with a 1-0 win over Slovenia at Wembley on Thursday night.

Harry Kane scored in added time at the end of the game to confirm England’s place at next summer’s tournament, despite a lacklustre performance.

England struggled to break Slovenia down and were almost caught out a few times by the away side.

Joe Hart was forced into an impressive double save midway through the second-time, smothering the ball at the feet of a Slovenia forward before blocking with his feet on the follow-up.

Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford both came close to opening the scoring before Kane’s goal. Sterling saw a shot, heading for the bottom corner, excellently blocked by a Slovenia defender, and Rashford failed to convert a one-on-one with the ‘keeper.

The goal eventually came when Kyle Walker won the ball back from a Jan Oblak throw and whipped a teasing cross into Kane to bundle the ball in from close range.

Picking a man of the match has been hard, with a few players who could easily have been picked. Joe Hart, Kyle Walker and Ryan Bertrand all deserve a mention.

But… our man of the match against Slovenia is Harry Kane!

The England captain produced when he was needed most and scored the all-important goal to send his country to the World Cup.

He was quiet at times due to the poor service, although he did hold the ball up well when he did receive possession.

Kane has now scored 11 goals in 22 caps for England.
