England were held to a 0-0 draw against Germany at Wembley on Friday evening.
Gareth Southgate was forced to make several bold calls with his team selection as a result of an injury crisis, with many senior players ruled out.
Jordan Pickford, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tammy Abraham were all handed their first ever starts for the England senior team. Joe Gomez and Jack Cork also came on to make their first-team bows for the country.
England produced a considerably impressive performance but were ultimately hindered by their lack of end product. Jamie Vardy came closest in the second half, when his header was well-saved by Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.
Germany came close on a few occasions though, with Leroy Sane striking the underside of the bar. Pickford was instrumental in helping England stay in the game, with some fine saves on his debut.
An entertaining contest between the sides finished 0-0, and there were certainly positive signs for Southgate and his men.
Here are our England player ratings.
Jordan Pickford - 8
A debut to be proud of. Pickford made several impressive stops, and his distribution was good throughout the evening too.
Kieran Trippier - 7
Trippier got down the flank well and produced some deft touches.
Phil Jones - 6
It’s difficult to give Jones a fair rating. He made a great block in the first half but came off with a knock. Manchester United fans will be hoping that one isn’t too serious.
John Stones - 7
A typically composed display from Stones, who is looking right at home nowadays in an England shirt.
Harry Maguire - 6
Maguire had a mixed game. He brought the ball out from the back well but gave it away cheaply, and almost cost England early on.
Danny Rose - 7
Rose, like his teammate Trippier, pushed down the wing efficiently and produced a good performance on his return to the England team.
Jake Livermore - 6
Livermore’s first touch let him down on several occasions. He provided a physical presence but left a lot to be desired.
Eric Dier - 6
Dier kept things ticking over well in the middle, and was composed on his first outing as England captain. Solid but unspectacular.
Ruben Lofrtus-Cheek - 8
Loftus-Cheek was England’s brightest spark on the night. He was inventive, powerful and made use of the ball well. A debut to remember, for sure.
Tammy Abraham - 6
Abraham looked comfortable on the night of his first ever England cap. He produced some neat touches but his final ball was lacking.
Jamie Vardy - 6
Vardy was unfortunate to have been denied by Ter Stegen but didn’t offer all that much on the night. His movement left a lot to be desired.
Substitutes
Joe Gomez – 6 – A generally positive debut. He made a couple errors in judgement but was solid on the whole.
Marcus Rashford – 6 – Rashford looked to use his pace but Germany’s compact defence largely stifled him.
Ryan Bertrand – 7 – Powered down the wing well on a few occasions and put in some dangerous balls.
Kyle Walker – 6 – Looked to get forward but was generally uninvolved.
Jack Cork – N/A – The Burnley man wasn’t on long enough to make an impact, but will take pride from receiving his first England cap.
Jesse Lingard – N/A – Wasn’t on for long enough, like Cork. However, he did spurn a glorious opportunity to win it with the final kick of the game.
