It was a heartbreaking night for the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday, as they missed out on qualification for the World Cup.
Denmark, and Christian Eriksen in particular, were in fine form as they swept aside Martin O’Neill’s men with a comprehensive 5-1 win at the Aviva Stadium.
Spurs playmaker Eriksen contributed with a superb hat-trick, while an own goal from Cyrus Christie and a late penalty from Nicklas Bendnter secured Denmark their place in Russia next summer.
It was a night to forget for the Republic of Ireland. Here’s how we rated their players.
Darren Randolph - 6
Wasn’t helped out by his defence, who were atrocious throughout. Made a smart save to deny Kvist.
Cyrus Christie - 4
Very poor defensively. His performance was summed up by him conceding an own goal.
Ciaran Clark - 5
Made a few good interceptions but Denmark’s attacking prowess simply proved too much.
Shane Duffy - 6
One of the more respectable performers on the night. Scored the solitary goal for his side.
Stephen Ward - 3
Shambolic display from the Burnley man.
David Meyler - 5
Withdrawn at half-time. Didn’t ever grab the game by the scruff of the neck.
Jeff Hendrick - 4
Very poor in the middle. Looked lost at times.
James McClean - 5
Performed with admirable effort but was ultimately well below par.
Harry Arter - 4
Made a few mistakes in the first-half and was taken off at the break. Not good enough.
Robbie Brady - 4
The game totally passed him by.
Daryl Murphy - 4
Worked reasonably hard but was another who looked lost.
Substitutes
Wes Hoolahan – 5 – Made little impact when he was brought on.
Aiden McGeady – 4 – Gave the ball away far too often.
Shane Long – 5 – Was on for only a short spell, but horribly miscued a good opportunity.
