The World Cup is fast approaching and Gareth Southgate has the tough choice of selecting which England players will make the starting 11 for the first game in Volgograd.
England are unbeaten in their last eight fixtures including an unfortunate 1-1 draw last time out against Italy.
Southgate had the chance to test out different players and a new system in the two friendlies last month.
In these games the England boss trialled at 5-2-2-1 formation in which Kyle Walker played as a centre back in the back five.
It is unclear whether this is a system that we’ll see start in Russia however it does appear to accommodate our best players.
The Three Lions’ opening game on June 18 is against Tunisia, which means we can expect to see an attacking team and creative midfielders. This will allow England to breakdown what will no doubt be a rearguard display from the Tunisians.
Here’s how we think England could line up during the group stage…
Goalkeeper: Jordan Pickford
One of the most difficult decisions Southgate has but Pickford has had a good season for Everton and doesn’t seem fazed by pressure. Faces competition from Jack Butland, Nick Pope and Joe Hart.
Centre Back: John Stones
Had a good season for Champions Man City. Good on the ball, one of the first names on the team sheet.
Centre Back: Harry Maguire
Had a solid season with Leicester, good at bringing the ball out of defence.
Centre Back: James Tarkowski
Had an excellent season in an Burnley side chasing European football.
Right Wing Back: Kyle Walker
Played on the right rather than in the centre as his pace and athleticism will be needed for getting in behind Tunisia. One of England’s best players on his day as he showed at the Euros.
Left Wing Back: Danny Rose
Pacey and athletic. Showed at Spurs and for England that he can deliver. The combination of Rose and Walker makes for impressive duo.
Centre Midfield: Eric Dier
One of England’s best players at the Euros. Covers the defence and keep the ball ticking.
Centre Midfield: Jordan Henderson
In impressive form for Liverpool captaining them to a Champions league semi final. Good range of passing and leadership abilities.
Attacking Midfield: Raheem Sterling
Scored 23 goals this term in a title winning City team, ability to create for strikers and possesses an abundance of pace.
Attacking Midfield: Jesse Lingard
Enjoying the best season of his Manchester United career. Notched 14 goals this season and scored England’s last goal in the 1-0 win over the Netherlands.
Harry Kane
The main man. Scores goals for fun and England need him to turn up at this tournament. Another leader in the squad.
