The World Cup is the biggest football tournament on the planet and as such, plenty goes on, both on and off the field. To keep updated with everything that happened at the tournament on day four, including results, news and funny goings-on, check out our latest round-up:
Brazil 1-1 Switzerland
Brazil failed to get off to a winning start in their opening World Cup fixture, as Switzerland held them to a 1-1 draw.
Philippe Coutinho sprung the first-half into life when he found the top left corner with a wonderfully-executed shot from range. However, Switzerland stunned Tite’s men as Steven Zuber thumped home a header from a corner.
It was a frustrating evening for Brazil, who probed but failed to break down a resilient Switzerland side who will be happy with their efforts.
Germany 0-1 Mexico
The biggest shock of the tournament ensued in Moscow on Sunday afternoon as Mexico stunned reigning World Cup champions Germany with a 1-0 win.
Joachim Low’s men were tipped as the favourites heading into the match but Mexico produced an impressive display to stymie their counterparts. Hirving Lozano finished off an electric first-half counter-attack to secure a famous victory for the South American side.
Germany will be desperate to bounce back in the coming days, but Mexico will be delighted with their efforts.
Costa Rica 0-1 Serbia
In what was a toughly-contested opening fixture on the fourth day of the World Cup, Serbia managed to clinch a narrow victory over Costa Rica.
It was a game of few chances in the end but Aleksandar Kolarov, who was a doubt following a knock in the warm-ups, saved Serbia with a quite glorious free-kick from distance.
The win will give Serbia a great deal of confidence as they gear up for clashes with Brazil and Switzerland in the coming days. Costa Rica, on the other hand, have it all to do.
Alisson's taking no risks...
It was a somewhat dull affair between Brazil and Switzerland in the evening match, with Tite’s men being frustrated by their counterparts.
Brazil goalkeeper Alisson had little to do, but was taking no prisoners when a giant balloon was launched onto the pitch.
Much to the amusement of pundits and supporters alike, he landed a thumping stamp onto the balloon, which was perhaps one of the more entertaining actions of the encounter…
England opt against training on the pitch ahead of Tunisia clash
Gareth Southgate and his England side are gearing up for their World Cup opener against Tunisia on Monday night and had the chance to train at the Volgograd Arena – where the game will be hosted.
However, the group reportedly opted against this proposal and continued their preparations in Saint Petersburg.
Time will tell if the training methods from Southgate have paid off…
Mexican Earthquakes
Hirving Lozano’s winning goal for Germany was one that sent all Mexicans around the globe into frenetic outpours of celebration.
It proved to be a historic strike, and it’s one that even set off earthquake sensors in the country of Mexico, as depicted by seismographs released following the game!
Southgate has told his men the line-up for Tunisia clash
The England players will be feeling fully prepared for their encounter with Tunisia after Gareth Southgate revealed that he has already informed them of his team selection.
It will be Southgate’s debut as a manager in the World Cup and he will be hoping that England can get off to a winning start in the groups, as Tunisia await on Monday evening.
