The World Cup is the biggest football tournament on the planet and as such, plenty goes on, both on and off the field. To keep updated with everything that happened at the tournament on day five, including results, news and funny goings-on, check out our latest round-up:
Tunisia 1-2 England
Harry Kane’s stoppage-time goal earned England a 2-1 win over Tunisia at the Volgograd Arena. England started the game very well and deserved the lead Kane gave them, but a Tunisian penalty, given after Kyle Walker swung an arm, got the African side back level. The second-half was a pretty poor spectacle but Kane’s late goal means that England won’t care one bit.
Belgium 3-0 Panama
Belgium got their campaign off to a winning start by putting three past Panama. Belgium carved Panama open on numerous occasions in the first half but lacked the final finish at crucial times. However, a wonderful strike from Dries Mertens opened the scoring just after the break. Romelu Lukaku’s brace, one of which was created by an exquisite pass from Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne, gave the Red Devils the winning start they wanted.
Sweden 1-0 South Korea
Sweden also got a win from their first game as they defeated South Korea thanks to a penalty from captain Andreas Granqvist that was awarded after a VAR review. The game itself was scrappy but the better team won as South Korea did not manage a single shot on target.
Lords of the flies
England’s game with Tunisia was affected by swarms of the small flying insects inside the Volgograd Arena. Players, such as Jesse Lingard (pictured) were attacked in the warm-ups and had to use a repellant spray to try to keep the insects at bay.
Nikola Kalinic sent home by Croatia
Away from the action, Croatia striker Nikola Kalinic has been sent home from the World Cup by coach Zlatko Dalic after he refused to come on as a substitute during the 2-0 win over Nigeria. The AC Milan star said he had a back injury, even though he was warming up as normal, so Dalic has sent him packing.
