The World Cup is the biggest football tournament on the planet and as such, plenty goes on, both on and off the field. To keep updated with everything that happened at the tournament on day nine, including results, news and funny moments, check out our latest round-up:
Serbia 1-2 Switzerland
Xherdan Shaqiri’s last-minute winning goal proved crucial as Switzerland overtook Serbia and moved into second place in Group E. The Stoke man completed a comeback after Aleksandar Mitrovic opened the scoring for Serbia, and Arsenal man Granit Xhaka drew level.
Nigeria 2-0 Iceland
Nigeria secured a much-needed victory over Iceland courtesy of a brace from Ahmed Musa. The Leicester City forward netted two finely-taken goals to place Nigeria in second place of the Group D table, handing Argentina a lifeline in the process…
Brazil 2-0 Costa Rica
The scoreline might look like this was a straightforward win for Brazil but that was far from the case. Costa Rica thought they were going to hold on for a famous point in a game where Brazil had a penalty decision overturned by VAR. However, two injury-time goals from Philippe Coutinho and Neymar respectively gave Tite’s side a much-needed win.
Gareth Southgate hits out at team leak
England manager Gareth Southgate hit out at the media reporters who leaked what looked like his teamsheet earlier this week. He said: “Obviously any time if we were to give the opposition the opportunity of having our team it’s a disadvantage to us. So, of course, our media has to decide if they want to help the team or not.”
Dele Alli unlikely to be fit for Panama game
Speaking of England, midfielder Dele Alli still hasn’t returned to training and as such, he is likely to miss the game against Panama on Sunday. Ruben Loftus-Cheek is expected to replace him in the starting line-up.
Aguero puts the boot in on Sampaoli
Sergio Aguero did not hold back in the criticism of his manager Jorge Sampaoli after Croatia defeated Argentina 3-0. He said: “Everything that happens to the team and the players’ drop in form is down to the management. The plan against Croatia did not work out.”
Jorge Sampaoli keeps his job... for now
On the subject of Jorge Sampaoli, there had been rumours circulating that he was going to be sacked before Argentina’s final group game with Nigeria. However, the AFA have announced that he will be in charge for the game. How long he’s in charge for after that game remains to be seen.
