England defeated Colombia 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Spartak Stadium, meaning they progress to the World Cup quarter-final.
The game kicked off with England attacking and Colombia pressing for the counter. However, neither side could breakthrough in the first-half.
After the interval, it took nine minutes for the Three Lions to win a penalty. Harry Kane was dragged down in the area by Carlos Sánchez. The Tottenham striker stepped up and slotted down the centre to break the deadlock.
Gareth Southgate’s men went on the hunt for a second and Dele Alli came close when his header in front of goal sailed agonisingly over the crossbar.
It looked like England had the game won but in added time, Mateus Uribe let fly with a magnificent effort from range and Jordan Pickford acrobatically dived left and made a superb finger-tip save. From the corner, Yerry Mina towered over Harry Maguire and headed down into the ground and it bounced over Kieran Trippier and into the ney.
The teams could not be separated in extra-time, despite Colombia being more threatening and Danny Rose shooting agonisingly wide. Penalties would decide the nations’ fate.
Pickford saved penalties from Uribe and Bacca before Eric Dier scored the winner and England finally exorcised the demons of the past.
Here’s how the England players rated:
Jordan Pickford - 8
Wasn’t troubled until late-on. The 24-year-old made a superb finger-tip save and conceded from the resulting corner. Saved Bacca’s penalty, getting a strong hand to it.
Kyle Walker - 6
Pacey down the right flank and looked to put midfielders into space. Did get away with a mental error as Colombia didn’t punish him. Came off in extra-time with cramp.
John Stones - 7
Solid in defence and was comfortable on the ball. A very assured performance.
Harry Maguire - 7
Beaten to the ball in front of goal several times. Couldn’t direct on target when successful. Was towered over by Mina, who headed home but it was tough to blame him for that.
Kieran Trippier - 6
Tested the Colombian defence from troubling crosses and set-pieces. Perhaps could have done better on the line to clear Mina’s header. Struck his penalty into the top corner at a vital point.
Ashley Young - 6
Produced hazardous crosses and set-pieces. Came off 12 minutes into extra-time looking tired.
Jesse Lingard - 5
Struggled to craft chances and get into goal-scoring positions. Not his best performance.
Jordan Henderson - 6
Controlled play from central midfield and looked to get forward at every opportunity. Saw his penalty saved but it was hardly the worst penalty anybody has ever taken, although he did telegraph it a bit.
Dele Alli - 5
Had a brilliant opportunity to double the lead – headed agonisingly over. Subbed off, after 80 minutes and looked like he was lacking a bit of zip after his injury.
Harry Kane - 8
Won a penalty and scored from it and his hold-up play was top class. In the penalty shootout, he hammered into the bottom corner. It looked like he was struggling with injury in extra-time which is something to worry about.
Raheem Sterling - 5
Looked dangerous on the break at times but like Alli and Lingard, his performance was underwhelming. He was taken off after 88 minutes.
Eric Dier [SUB] - 6
He did not play at all well. He was ponderous and also missed a free header late in extra time. However, he did show nerve to step up and take the penalty to put England into the quarter final.
Jamie Vardy [SUB] - 5
Shot down the goalkeeper’s throat and was ruled offside. Was full of running but didn’t provide much threat. Slightly surprised that he didn’t take a penalty.
Danny Rose [SUB] - 7
From a narrow-angle, he shot agonisingly wide of the right post and looked very good. He should be in consideration for a start against the Swedes.
Marcus Rashford [SUB] - 6
Didn’t do too much in extra-time but fired his penalty into the bottom corner.
