England bounced back from the disappointment of the defeat against Spain at the weekend with a narrow 1-0 victory over Switzerland at the King Power Stadium.
Marcus Rashford scored the game’s only goal as Gareth Southgate’s side claimed their first victory since the quarter-final of the summer’s World Cup in Russia.
The England boss made nine changes for the visit of the Swiss with just Leicester’s Harry Maguire and Manchester United’s Rashford surviving from the side which was beaten by Spain.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier captained the side which featured a number of players who have lacked minutes for their clubs, which appeared to show in the first-half performance.
Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri caused the England backline problems, with Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland coming close to putting in his own net in the opening moments.
Here is how we rated the England players following the narrow win over Switzerland this evening.
Jack Butland - 5
The Stoke stopper was poor in this one, particularly in terms of his distribution which nearly resulted in an own goal.
Kyle Walker - 7
An assured performance from the City man in central defence as he looked calm and composed on the ball.
James Tarkowski - 8
Another strong showing from Burnley man, giving Southgate plenty to think about moving forward.
Harry Maguire - 6
The poorest of all the English defenders with his distribution being a problem throughout.
Trent Alexander-Arnold - 7
Was a constant threat down the England right side, causing the Swiss all sorts of problems in the game.
Eric Dier - 6
Wasn’t his best game, but he did lead the team well in patches.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek - 6
Struggled to make an impact on the game, although, he did make some driving runs forward before being replaced.
Fabian Delph - 5
Really found it tough in this game, giving the ball away quite often in what was a poor showing.
Danny Rose - 9
A superb performance from the Spurs man and was England’s biggest threat on the night.
Marcus Rashford - 7
Scored another goal for England which proved to be the match-winner, in what was a fine performance.
Danny Welbeck - 6
Looked sharp at times, but really failed to make much of an impact in the Swiss box.
Harry Kane – 6: Held the ball well up front, but didn’t really create any clear-cut chances for himself.
John Stones – 7: Came on with half an hour to go and looked really clever and composed on the ball in a strong showing.
Jesse Lingard – 6: Like Stones and Kane, he was introduced for the final 30 minutes and looked really sharp in the game.
Jordan Henderson – 7: Improved England when he came on, putting in a real shift and causing the Swiss all sorts of problems centrally.
Ben Chilwell – 6: Came on for his debut late on, but it’s hard to give him anything other than a six.
Kieran Trippier – 7: Was introduced in the last 15 minutes and looked strong down the England right.
