The Republic of Ireland drew 0-0 with Denmark at the Aviva Stadium tonight in a UEFA Nations League game that will not last long in the memories of those who watched it.
Most of the first-half was so devoid of any real action that the fans would have been forgiven if they started to fall asleep. In fact, the only time the home fans had something to get excited about was when Hendrick took advantage of some Danish confusion to run through on goal, but he inexplicably missed the target when he only had the keeper to beat.
The second-half had more action (which wasn’t exactly difficult), but, apart from a goalline clearance and a couple of speculative efforts, it was still nothing to write home about.
The quality of the game can be summed up by the fact that there were more yellow cards in the match (5) than shots on target (3).
Here are our Ireland player rating’s for tonight’s game:
GK: Darren Randolph - 6
Showed incredible bravery to delay Delaney in the first-half. Only had two other easy saves to make for the rest of the game.
CB: Richard Keogh -6
Defended solidly and helped to restrict Denmark to long-range efforts on goal.
CB: Shane Duffy - 6
Like Keogh, Duffy was also solid at the back and had a relatively comfortable evening. Had a header in the first-half that he perhaps should have done better with.
CB: Kevin Long - 6
Another solid performer at the back. The three centre-backs can be happy about their performances today.
RWB: Matt Doherty - 4
Made his debut tonight, but you’d be forgiven for thinking he wasn’t even on the field. Barely heard his name mentioned all game.
CDM: Cyrus Christie - 5
Played in an unfamiliar midfield role and looked lost at times. He forced Schmeichel into his first and only save of the night in the 71st minute.
CM: Callum O'Dowda - 4.5
Suffered a head injury halfway through the first-half and looked groggy from then on. He never recovered and was taken off at half-time.
CM: Harry Arter - 5.5
Went into the ref’s book early on thanks to a needless foul. He struggled to get involved in the game, but he saved his side when he cleared the ball off the line on the hour mark. Subbed off a few minutes later.
CM: Jeff Hendrick - 4.5
Tried to take advantage of some Danish confusion but missed the target when he only had the keeper to beat. Put in a couple of teasing deliveries, but they came to nothing.
LWB: James McClean - 5
Put in a couple of decent deliveries and made an effort to get the ball back whenever his team lost the ball. However, he gave away a number of needless fouls and was eventually booked.
CF: Shane Long - 6
His hold-up play in the first-half was good and he ran himself into the ground as he always does. Shame he had no one to help him.
SUB: Callum Robinson -6.5
Robinson was positive from the moment he came on and he gave the Irish fans something to cheer about with his direct runs.
SUB: Enda Stevens - 5
Came on at half-time and helped his team to keep a clean sheet.
SUB: Aiden O'Brien - N/A
Came on in the 81st minute for Shane Long, so he didn’t have enough time to get into the game.
