England’s Euro 2020 qualifying campaign kicks off tonight against the Czech Republic and Gareth Southgate will be expecting a victory. England have a favourable qualifying group, with Bulgaria, Montenegro and Kosovo making up the remainder of Group A. The Three Lions have a history of doing very well during the qualifying stage for major international tournaments and they’ll definitely be looking for a strong campaign again. But who will be the standout performer? Who could be dropped? We’ve predicted how England’s campaign could pan out.
Most goals - Harry Kane
Who else? The England captain is a goal machine and he’ll be expected to lead the line for the entire campaign. Kane also takes England’s penalties, so that could help his cause.
Most assists - Jadon Sancho
Sancho is one of the youngest players in the squad, but he’s one of the most in-form out of them all. The winger has provided an incredible 12 assists in the Bundesliga this season. Kane and co will be licking their lips every time Sancho gets the ball.
Most cards - Harry Maguire
The Leicester centre-back is always in the thick of the battle and naturally, that sees him pick up yellow cards. He’s had five yellows and one red in the Premier League this season.
Most starts - Harry Kane
Kane is the captain and is Southgate’s main player. Unless he’s injured, Kane is always the first name on the team sheet.
Most substitute appearances - Ruben Loftus-Cheek
Loftus-Cheek is an ideal player to bring on from the bench. If England are chasing a goal, then he can come on and find one or if they’re looking to see out a win, then he can come on to add some balance to the midfield.
Senior debut - Callum Hudson-Odoi
Hudson-Odoi will be confident of getting on the pitch tonight, but if he doesn’t, then he is almost certain to get some minutes against Montenegro on Monday.
Most likely to be dropped - James Ward-Prowse
Ward-Prowse was handed a surprise call up to the senior side after players pulled out through injury. With players like Harry Winks and Jesse Lingard absent and James Maddison in a good run of form, Ward-Prowse could be the one to drop out of the squad.
Most likely to be called up - James Maddison
Maddison is in good form for Leicester under new manager Brendan Rodgers and many were left baffled when his name was not on the list of players selected by Gareth Southgate.
Surprise package - Callum Wilson
The striker is a nuisance whenever he’s on the pitch. His pace and finishing ability could surprise many teams during this qualifying campaign.
Surprise recall - Ben Foster
With Jordan Pickford looking shaky, Ben Foster may fancy his chances of a recall to the England team. He’s been brilliant for Watford this season and will certainly be in Southgate’s mind.
