England defeated Montenegro 7-0 on Thursday evening, thanks to goals from Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and Tammy Abraham. The win means England will be playing at Euro 2020 next summer, with all three of their group games taking place at Wembley. Here’s how we rated the England players after their dominating victory.
Jordan Pickford - 6
Had hardly anything to do compared to his opposite number. Proved reliable when called upon.
Trent Alexander-Arnold - 8
Had tons of freedom down the right side with little to no issues. Made some key forward passes, linking up well with both Sancho and Oxlaide-Chamberlain throughout.
Harry Maguire - 7
Also had very little to do, struggled to get himself a goal despite numerous chances from corners. Kept the ball well.
CB - John Stones - 7
Brought the ball out of defence really well. Remained untroubled throughout, picking his passes well.
Ben Chilwell - 9
Floated in a fantastic ball for the first, covering his left side all game both defensively and in attacking support. Ended the game with three assists from left-back.
Harry Winks - 6
Linked play up in the centre of the park pretty well, although seemed inferior to those around him stealing the show. Wasn’t involved as much as his other midfield counterparts.
Mason Mount - 7
Naturally gifted and showed moments of real quality. Grew into the game as it went on.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - 8
Excellent performance on his first return to international duty for over 18 months. He was constantly involved, covering the pitch thoroughly and expressing himself. Managed to get on the score-sheet early on with a well-taken goal
Marcus Rashford - 9
Battled well and caused problems for the Montenegro backline. Had people watching over their shoulder intently but they still couldn’t stop him. Powerful, to say the least. Created tons of chances and made a few of the goals as well as getting one of his own. A fantastic contribution.
Jadon Sancho - 7
Had little influence upon those around him, tried to get into the game but failed to do so. Showed some moments of genius but lacked consistency. Grew more confident in moments. Good positioning and played a timely pass for Abraham’s goal to get himself an assist.
Harry Kane - 9
Oozed class for the entirety of the match, bagging himself a hat-trick and bullying the defence. Took advantage of some questionable defending at times too. Moved to sixth in England’s all-time top-scorers list.
Sub - James Maddison - 7
Demonstrated his creative and attacking flair when he came on, showed some clever feet and made some intricate passes.
Sub - Tammy Abraham - 7
Forced to come deep to get involved, proved to be quite isolated. Had a few chances bypass him but had some pieces of attractive football. Good movement for his goal.
Sub - Joe Gomez - 6
Had a 20-minute cameo where he solidified the defence. Just to be sure I presume, Gareth?
